About Hearing Aids Explained

Hearing Aids Explained is an independent publisher of plain-English guides about hearing aids and hearing loss, written for adults in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond — and for the family members who help them decide.

How we research

Every guide starts from primary sources and links to them, so you can check our work. The ones we rely on most:

  • U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rules for over-the-counter hearing aids
  • National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)
  • Hearing-aid makers' own specifications, prices and support documents
  • Published, peer-reviewed hearing research

Prices, rules and product details change, so each guide shows the date it was last updated, and we revisit guides when the facts move.

Who writes our guides

Guides are written and checked by the Hearing Aids Explained editorial team. We are not doctors, audiologists or hearing-aid dispensers, and nothing on this site replaces a hearing test or advice from a professional who knows your situation.

Our editorial policy explains how a guide is researched, checked and corrected.

How the site is paid for

Some links on this site are affiliate links: if you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide what we recommend, and no company can pay to be included or ranked. Details are in our affiliate disclosure.
